Implementation of a global aphasia awareness campaign

Implementation of a global aphasia awareness campaign

The Tavistock Trust for Aphasia has approved matched funding for the first united, global aphasia awareness campaign! Researchers at the Queensland Aphasia Research Centre (QARC) at The University of Queensland will lead the project.

People with aphasia, clinicians, and researchers from 40 countries helped to design the campaign.

Aphasia affects how people speak, understand, read and write. Yet many people have never heard of aphasia or do not understand it.

The campaign will use the same clear message around the world. It will use facts from research to help people understand aphasia.

The funding will support the team to:

  • develop campaign materials
  • translate the materials into as many languages as possible
  • keep the campaign materials in one central place
  • work with people with aphasia, health workers, researchers and organisations around the world to deliver the campaign
  • recruit campaign champions in as many countries as possible
  • launch the campaign around the world on the same day.

People with aphasia and media experts will help create short, animated videos and simple infographics.

The Collaboration of Aphasia Trialists will help translate the materials into many languages.

We will evaluate the campaign by:

  • seeing how many people it reaches
  • measuring how people use and respond to the campaign materials
  • tracking downloads
  • asking campaign champions about their experience.
